Key Snapped in Your Lock? Do Not Touch It Yet

Call before you try anything. When a key snaps in a lock, the lock itself is usually unharmed and the broken piece can normally be taken out without replacing a thing. Prodding at it is what pushes the fragment deeper or damages the parts around it, and most of the harm on these jobs happens in the ten minutes before anyone rings a locksmith. Call 01483 377197.

Woking Locksmith answers calls 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and there is no call-out charge. Hold off on glue, pins, screwdrivers or paperclips while you wait: glue can bond the fragment to the parts inside and narrow the repair options, and improvised tools tend to push the piece further in or block the way to it. If anything has already been tried, just say so when you call. For other urgent problems, see emergency locksmith.

What Not to Do With a Snapped Key

What happens in the next few minutes shapes how the key can be removed. Keep the half that came away, because it helps the locksmith identify the key and judge the break, and leave the trapped piece exactly where it is. Stop testing the lock, do not force the handle, and do not use the loose half to turn the cylinder. These are the attempts we see most, and what each one does:

01

Superglue.

It bonds the broken piece to the pins inside, and often turns a simple extraction into a full cylinder replacement.

02

Hairpins, thin screwdrivers or paperclips.

These push the fragment deeper into the keyway, where it is much harder to reach.

03

Pliers or tweezers on a flush break.

With nothing to grip, the attempt usually just scores the keyway.

04

Drilling.

It destroys the cylinder, which was probably the one part that was fine.

05

Pushing the other half back in.

That drives the fragment further and can jam the pins.

The one safe exception: if part of the key is clearly sticking out and you can grip it without force, a careful pull with tweezers sometimes works. If it does not come away on the first try, stop and call. Where the lock does turn out to need changing, our lock replacement page explains the options.

Discuss Your Lock Problem

Why Keys Snap in the First Place

A snapped key is rarely bad luck. More often it is the end of something that has been building for weeks, and the break alone does not tell you the cause, so the key, the lock and the door may all need looking at together. The usual reasons:

  • A lock that has been getting stiffer for months, with worn or damaged parts adding resistance, until the key is forced once too often
  • A key worn thin by years of use, bending or old damage
  • A poorly cut duplicate, since some copies are made from thinner, weaker blanks than the original
  • Cold weather, which can stiffen a borderline mechanism just enough to tip it over

A door that does not meet its frame properly also loads the lock and the key. If the lock was stiff before the key went, taking the fragment out will not cure the underlying fault, and the next key will eventually go the same way. If that is what the technician finds, you will be told, and our lock repair page covers what comes next.

Your Lock Is Probably Fine

Most people assume a snapped key means a new lock. Usually it does not. In most cases the cylinder is undamaged, the extraction is a short job with the right tools, and the same lock goes on working with your other keys. That alone can take a large part off the cost you were bracing for.

There are honest exceptions. A key that has been forced deep into the keyway, a cylinder already worn enough to cause the break, or damage from an earlier DIY attempt can all mean extraction alone is not enough. Those cases are covered in the next sections; otherwise, call 01483 377197 and leave the lock as it is.

Locks We Extract Broken Keys From

The method differs from one lock type to another, which is why you will be asked what kind of door or lock it is when you call:

  • Euro cylinders on uPVC and composite doors (see uPVC door locks)
  • Mortice locks on timber doors
  • Nightlatch rim cylinders
  • Padlocks on gates, sheds and outbuildings
  • Window locking handles (see window locks)

When the Lock Does Need Replacing

Sometimes replacement is the right answer. The fragment may be out of reach, so drilling becomes the only way in; the cylinder may have been worn or damaged before the key broke; an earlier attempt with glue or a tool may have damaged the mechanism; or, with one key now gone, you may prefer to retire the whole set rather than rely on what is left. In that case a new cylinder comes with a fresh set of keys. If replacement is needed, you are told why before any work starts and given the price at that point. See lock replacement for how the swap works.

Locksmith pricing

What Does Broken Key Removal Cost in Woking?

A price for extraction has not been published yet. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether an extraction starting price can be published] A clean extraction from an undamaged cylinder is the cheapest outcome and a cylinder replacement the most expensive. The price depends on:

  • How the key broke, and whether any of it is sticking out
  • The type of lock
  • Whether an earlier attempt has made the job harder
  • Whether the cylinder needs replacing afterwards, and what time of day it is

There is no call-out charge, and the price is given on the call from what you tell us; if something on site changes it, you hear before any work starts. Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, while evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays carry a higher labour rate. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged.

Call 01483 377197 for a price.

What affects the cost?

Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.

What Happens When You Call

  1. Tell us what the key has snapped in, whether any of it is visible and whether anything has already been tried.
  2. You get a price and an arrival estimate. [PROVIDER PACK: arrival ranges]
  3. A technician [PROVIDER PACK: DBS check evidence] removes the broken piece with specialist extraction tools and checks that the lock still works properly afterwards.
  4. If the cylinder turns out to be damaged, you are told before anything is replaced.

Asking what has been tried is deliberate: a glued fragment is a very different job from a clean break, and knowing changes both the price and the tools brought. You can ring at any hour when a broken key stops you getting in or leaves a door unsecured. Contact us or read customer reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you come out at night for a snapped key?

Yes. Calls are answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. A key broken in a front door usually means the property cannot be secured, which is why it is treated as urgent.

I tried to superglue the two halves together. Have I made it worse?

Possibly, so mention it when you call. Glue can bond the broken piece to the pins inside, which can turn a simple extraction into a cylinder replacement. Do not add more glue, another key or any improvised tool, because each can push the fragment further in.

Can I get it out myself with pliers or tweezers?

Only if part of the key is clearly sticking out and can be gripped without force. If it slides out easily, fine. If it does not move on the first try, stop: most of the damage on these jobs comes from repeated attempts.

The key snapped and half of it is still in my hand. Does that help?

Yes. Keep it and hand it over when the technician arrives, because it shows the lock type, the key profile and roughly how the break happened. Stop using the lock in the meantime.

Will I need a new lock if my key has snapped?

Usually not. In many cases the cylinder is undamaged and the broken piece can be extracted, leaving the lock working with your remaining keys. Whether extraction is possible depends on the lock, where the fragment sits and whether the keyway or other parts are damaged, so the lock is inspected before the method is confirmed.

How long does it take to remove a broken key?

A clean break in an undamaged cylinder is usually a short job once the technician is on site. It takes longer where the fragment has been pushed deep, where glue or a tool has been used, or where the cylinder needs replacing. [PROVIDER PACK: typical extraction durations]

Why did my key snap in the first place?

Seldom by accident. Most snapped keys follow a lock that had been getting stiffer, a key worn thin over years, or a poorly cut copy on a weaker blank, and cold weather can tip a marginal lock over. If the lock itself is the cause, you will be told.

What does it cost to have a broken key removed in Woking?

It depends on how the key broke, whether any of it is showing, the lock type, whether anything has already been tried, and the time of day. A clean extraction from an undamaged cylinder is the least expensive outcome. There is no call-out charge and you get the price before any work begins. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: extraction starting price, if one is to be published]
