What Homeowners Actually Call Us About
Domestic locksmith work runs from urgent access problems to faulty locks and planned security improvements. These are the moments that usually lead to a call, so pick the one that sounds like yours.

You are locked out
Keys left inside, a door pulled shut behind you or a lock that refuses to open can all leave you outside your own house or flat. Most doors are opened without damage and the lock keeps working afterwards, at any hour. See locked out or, for anything urgent at night,.

You have just moved in
There is no telling how many copies of the old keys were cut or who still has them. Changing the external locks puts the new occupants in charge of who can get in, and the cylinders can usually be keyed alike so one key does every door. Arrange it through.

You have lost your keys
This is not the same as being locked out: lost keys might still open your front door for whoever finds them. Swapping the affected lock or cylinder means none of the missing keys work any more. Book a lock replacement, or if you are stuck outside, start with.

Something has stopped working
A key that sticks, a loose handle, a door that has dropped or a lock that no longer behaves should be looked at before it gets worse, and do not force the key or handle in the meantime. It is often an adjustment rather than a new lock. Go to lock repair or.

You have been broken into
If there is immediate danger, stay outside and call 999. Damaged locks, doors and other entry points can be checked and secured after the police give permission for work to begin. Book burglary repairs, and where a repair has to wait,.

You want the place more secure
No emergency, just a feeling that the locks are tired or the back door is weak. If locks are old, unsuitable or awkward to use, a locksmith can check the doors and windows and set out the repair, replacement or installation options, usually starting with the front door cylinder. See lock installation and.
A Door-by-Door Look at Your Home
A home is usually only as secure as its weakest opening, and that is rarely the front door. Walk round your own house with these four in mind.
The front door
The door everyone thinks about, and usually the best protected. On a timber door, look for a British Standard mortice lock with a kitemark on the faceplate. On a uPVC or composite door, look for a star or Diamond rating stamped on the face of the cylinder. If either is missing, see lock replacement or lock installation, and our guide BS 3621 explained covers the detail.
The back and patio doors
Often the weakest point and the least thought about, because they are out of sight of the street, which is exactly why they get used. Back, French and patio doors may have cylinders, multipoint mechanisms or other hardware, and older sliding doors often still carry their original locks. If the handle is hard to lift, the locking points will not engage or the key is stiff, book a lock repair or look at.
The windows
Check that ground-floor windows, and any you can reach from a flat roof, balcony or extension, close properly and that their locks work and the keys are to hand. Compare the security on your accessible windows with your insurance policy wording, as some policies set requirements for these openings. Broken or missing window locks are common and inexpensive to fix:.
The garage, shed and side gate
The forgotten ones. A side gate that opens gives someone cover to work on the back of the house unseen, and sheds and garages hold both valuables and the tools that make forcing a door easier. Make sure the locks, latches and hasps work and still suit the opening; lock installation covers upgrades.
A Free Home Security Check
[CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether a free security check is offered. If not, delete this section entirely.]
Security at home depends on more than the front door, and the less visible openings are easy to overlook even though they are just as much a way in. A check covers a walk round every opening above and gives you:
- a look at whether each door closes properly, each lock runs smoothly and each key turns without force
- a note of what each door uses, since timber, uPVC and composite doors are locked in different ways
- BS 3621 is commonly relevant to qualifying key-operated lock assemblies on timber doors; uPVC and composite doors often use different locking systems, so the existing hardware is checked against your insurer's requirements
- a plain list of what meets current standards and what does not, with a price for anything worth doing
There is no obligation, and nothing is fitted on the day unless you ask. Call to book.
What Homeowners Most Often Get Wrong
A lock can look strong and still be worn, unsuitable or wrong for the door. These five misunderstandings come up again and again, and spotting them tells you when a check, repair or replacement is due.
"It's a five-lever lock, so it's insurance approved."
A five-lever lock is not automatically certified to BS 3621. Look for the British Standard number and certification mark, then compare the lock with your policy. See BS 3621 explained.
"It's only a bit stiff."
A stiff key, heavy handle or door that needs a shove to lock points to misalignment, wear or a mechanism starting to fail, and forcing it can leave the door unable to lock at all. Book a.
"The uPVC door won't lock, so I need a new door."
Almost never. The mechanism or alignment is usually the issue:.
"I lost my keys, so I'll just get a new one cut."
The old keys still work. Replacing the cylinder is what retires them:.
"The safe is heavy enough."
A safe that is not bolted down may not carry the rating it was bought for:.
Renting, or Letting a Property Out?
Around 36% of Woking households rent, 23.4% privately and 12.3% from a social landlord, against 63.2% who own (Census 2021, TS054, Woking built-up area). If you rent, contact your landlord or letting agent first where you can: they often hold a spare key and may need to approve planned changes to the locks. Where they cannot come out, we can open the door and will normally ask you to show you live there; for anything beyond a like-for-like replacement, check your tenancy agreement first. See locked out.
Landlords and letting agents: changing locks between tenancies is routine and can be timed around the changeover date, and cylinders across several properties can be keyed alike where one person needs access to all of them. Our landlord and HMO services page has the detail, and business premises sit under commercial locksmith.
Locksmith pricing
What Does a Home Locksmith Cost?
The right next step depends on whether you own, rent or manage the home, and homeowners can book anything from emergency access to repairs, lock changes and new installations. A standard weekday lockout, Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm, starts from £70.80 including VAT (£59 plus VAT). That is a starting price for a straightforward job in normal hours, not a fixed price for every call; the final figure depends on the lock, the work and the time, and you are given the price on the call from what you describe. If the work is not urgent, tell us which door, window or lock is affected so we can match the right service.
You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged.
For every other job, see the full guide to locksmith prices in Woking or view all locksmith services. Call 01483 377197 for a price.
What affects the cost?
Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.
Domestic Locksmith Services Across Woking
We work on homes across Woking, from Mount Hermon flats to suburban semis. The mix of housing changes what is on the doors from one street to the next. Across the town, 29.4% of households live in flats, 27.3% in detached houses, 24.2% in semis and 19.0% in terraces, out of 30,440 households (Census 2021, TS044, Woking built-up area). Around 22% of homes date from before 1940 (6.2% pre-1900 and 16.1% from 1900 to 1939), 42.7% from 1945 to 1982, 22.4% from 1983 to 2008 and 11.8% from 2009 on (VOA Council Tax stock of properties, 31 March 2026). As a tendency, older homes are more likely to have timber doors with mortice locks, while post-war and newer homes more often have uPVC or composite doors with multipoint locks. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: technician view of local door and lock stock.] Mount Hermon has a high share of flats and a lot of private renting (Census 2021, output areas near Mount Hermon), so communal entrances, shared doors and landlord approval come up often there.
Woking has 14 conservation areas, among them Old Woking, The Hockering and Mount Hermon (planning.data.gov.uk, Oct 2026). No Article 4 direction affecting doors or windows is recorded, though that is not proof none exists, so check with the council before replacing a door; conservation status affects a replacement door, not the lock fitted in it.
We cover the GU21 and GU22 postcode districts (ONSPD, Feb 2026), including Horsell and Knaphill. The Woking built-up area had around 75,700 usual residents at the 2021 Census (ONS). Three towns are also served from Woking, each with its own page: Sheerwater, New Haw and West Byfleet. See all areas we cover. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: genuine coverage areas]

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you come out at night for a house lockout?
Yes. Emergency calls are taken 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. Many house lockouts are opened without damaging the lock, so your keys still work afterwards. Out-of-hours work is charged at a higher labour rate, but there is still no call-out charge. [PROVIDER PACK: arrival range]
I rent. Should I call you or my landlord?
Usually your landlord or letting agent first, since they often have a spare key. If you cannot reach them or they cannot come, we can open the door, and we will normally ask you to show that you live there.
Do I need to change the locks when I move house?
You cannot tell how many copies of the keys are still in circulation or who has them, which makes changing the locks a sensible precaution. Check the existing locks at the same time for condition, suitability and any insurance requirements.
Which part of my house is most likely to be the weak point?
Rarely the front door. Back doors, patio doors and ground-floor windows often carry the oldest hardware and sit out of sight of the street. Side gates matter too.
How can I tell if my locks meet my insurance policy?
Check the faceplate on a timber door for a British Standard kitemark and number, and the face of a euro cylinder on a uPVC or composite door for a star rating or Diamond mark. If there is no marking, compare with your policy wording or ask us to look.
Can you look at the whole house rather than just one door?
Yes, and it often makes sense. Locks of the same age tend to wear out around the same time, so if one has failed, the others may not be far behind.
What is the difference between a domestic and a commercial locksmith?
For a house or flat, a domestic locksmith deals with getting you in and with the locks fitted to doors and windows. The doors, hardware and access systems in business premises may differ from those in homes; work on these premises, including shops and offices, falls to a commercial locksmith.
Do you fit burglar alarms or CCTV?
We work on locks, doors, windows, safes and the hardware that secures them; alarms and CCTV are a separate trade. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: alarms and CCTV not offered.]
