Need a Safe Fitted Properly?
Woking Locksmith fits home and business safes across Woking, bolting them down into a solid floor or wall so the installation meets the manufacturer's instructions and what your insurer expects. There is no call-out charge. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM item 23, and whether safes are supplied or fitting only.]
Here is the point that changes the decision: the grade you paid for only counts if the safe is fitted correctly. A safe that is not fixed down can be carried out of the building, however heavy it feels. If a safe is already locked and you cannot get in, that is safe opening.

Why Installation Decides Whether Your Insurance Pays
A safe's cash rating is the figure an insurer looks at when deciding how much cash it may cover inside it. That rating assumes the safe is fitted the way the manufacturer specifies, which for nearly every rated safe means anchored into a concrete floor or a solid masonry wall.
A safe standing on floorboards, tucked in a wardrobe or screwed into plasterboard has not been installed to that specification. If it disappears in a burglary, whether the rating applied becomes a real question at claim time. Most insurers require rated safes to be fixed as the maker directs, and an unfixed safe may affect your cover. Policies differ, so read your wording and confirm the requirements with your insurer.
Whether a given safe can go where you want depends on its design, size and weight, the maker's instructions, access through the property and the spot you have chosen. Before we come, send us what you have: the manufacturer and model, rough height, width and depth, approximate weight, and the installation instructions or manual. We then fix it to specification, into a surface that will hold, and tell you straight if the planned position will not work. For locks your insurer may also ask about, see BS 3621 and insurance-approved locks explained.
Cash Ratings and Eurograde: What Your Insurer Is Asking For
If your insurer has quoted you a figure or a grade, this is what it means. The detail matters, because the label on a safe and the rating an insurer accepts are not always the same thing.
| Term | What it refers to | Typical setting |
|---|---|---|
| Cash rating | Cash an insurer may cover in that safe | Set by your insurer per policy |
| Valuables rating | Jewellery, watches and other high-value items | Often higher than the cash rating; varies by insurer |
| Eurograde 0 or 1 | Tested resistance grade under EN 1143-1 | Most homes |
| Eurograde 2 or 3 | Higher tested resistance | Often retail and hospitality |
| Higher grades | Longer, more determined attack resisted | High-value stock: speak to the insurer first |
Cash rating and valuables rating
A cash rating indicates the amount of cash an insurer may be prepared to cover when stored in a particular safe. It is not an automatic insurance limit, because insurers can attach their own conditions. Before buying, ask your insurer what cash rating they need for the sum you plan to keep. The valuables rating covers items such as jewellery and watches, and the accepted figure may be higher than the cash rating; it is conventionally quoted as a multiple, commonly ten times, but the calculation varies between insurers, so never assume a standard multiplier applies to your policy and confirm the level directly. Where one large safe will not fit, more than one smaller safe can sometimes give a combined rating.
Eurograde and EN 1143-1
EN 1143-1 is a European standard for testing and classifying how well safes and similar secure storage resist burglary. A safe certified to it can be given a resistance grade, usually called a Eurograde, by an independent certification body; AiS and ECBS are the bodies whose marks carry weight. Grades start at 0 and rise, each step meaning the safe withstood a longer and more skilled attack in testing.
Not every safe sold is actually certified
Plenty of safes sold in the UK are called "security safes" or carry the maker's own star rating without independent EN 1143-1 or EN 14450 certification. Those do not hold a recognised cash or valuables rating, however solid they look. Check for a certification plate or label that names the standard and the testing body, not just a number printed by the manufacturer. It is the same kind of check as looking for the kitemark on a door lock, covered in BS 3621 and insurance-approved locks explained.
Where a Safe Should Actually Be Fitted
The right spot is a balance between being hidden, being convenient to use and what the building can physically take. Ratings describe the level of protection a product was assessed for, and the right one depends on what you store, its insured value and any insurer conditions; a grade describes tested burglary resistance, but it does not automatically establish how much an individual insurer will cover, and some other storage products are tested under different standards.
Floor fixing
This is the usual method. The safe is bolted through its base into a solid concrete floor using the manufacturer's fixing points. A suspended timber floor will not hold a safe against a determined attack, which is why the floor's construction matters more than which room it is in.
Wall fixing
Where a floor fixing is not practical, the safe is bolted into solid masonry, never plasterboard or a stud wall. It suits smaller safes and wall safes recessed into brickwork. The wall's construction decides whether this works at all, and a stud wall rules it out.
Underfloor safes
An underfloor safe is set into the floor and hidden under a covering. It is very hard to remove and easy to conceal, but the floor has to be opened and the safe set in concrete, so this is planned work, not a same-day fitting.
Where not to put it
Not in the obvious places, such as the main bedroom wardrobe. Not anywhere you can see it from a window or a door. Not on a surface that cannot bear the weight. And not anywhere damp, which harms both the safe and what is inside it over time.
Safes We Fit
The right position has to suit the safe's design, the maker's instructions, its weight and how you will use it, and the structure, access route and conditions in that spot all need checking first. The wall or floor's construction and condition decide whether it is suitable, the instructions may set out how the safe must sit or be fixed, and the fixing method is only chosen once safe and structure have been assessed. The safe also has to be moved safely through the property before it can go in. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM item 23: only list types and grades actually fitted.]

Key Safe Installation
A key safe is the small box fixed to an outside wall that holds a door key, most often so carers, family or a care agency can let themselves in to someone who cannot get to the door. They are also handy for holiday lets, tradespeople and shared access. If you are arranging one for a parent or relative, a little thought about where and how it goes makes all the difference.
A key safe is only as secure as its fixing and its position:
- fit it out of sight of the street
- fix it into solid masonry, not render or mortar joints
- choose a police-approved model to a recognised standard, which care providers and some insurers ask for
Councils and housing associations sometimes arrange key safes as part of a care package, so check that first. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether key safes are fitted, and whether police-approved models are supplied or customer supplied.] For other home security work, see residential locksmith.
Already Bought a Safe? We Can Fit It
Many of the pages you will find are safe retailers who only install what they sell. Plenty of people buy a safe online or in a shop and then find that delivery does not include fitting, or that it needs bolting down properly before it counts. We fit safes bought anywhere, to the manufacturer's specification, and we tell you before starting if your chosen spot will not take it or if the safe does not meet what your insurer has asked for. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether safes are also supplied; if so, add one sentence offering that.] Call us with the details and we will tell you what to expect.

What Does Safe Installation Cost?
What you pay depends on the safe, access through the property, where it is going and the work needed. A large or heavy safe may need extra handling, a second technician or moving equipment, and its size and weight affect the route it can take. Stairs, narrow doors, tight corridors, restricted parking and the distance from the van to the room all count. The main factors:
- the size and weight of the safe
- the fixing method and what the floor or wall is made of
- whether the floor or wall needs preparing first
- access, including stairs and tight doorways
- a simple bolt-down versus an underfloor safe set in concrete
A small home safe bolted to a concrete floor is the quickest job; an underfloor safe is the most involved. Fixings, materials and time all follow from the safe and the structure around it. Send a photo of the safe and the spot you have in mind, because both shape the quote. There is no call-out charge, the price is given on the call, and if anything on site changes it you are told before work begins.
You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged.

What affects the cost?
Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.
What Happens When You Call
- Give us the manufacturer, model, size and rough weight, or send a photo, and tell us where it is going and whether the route has stairs, narrow doors or tight corners.
- We say whether that position should work and give you a price; the position and work are confirmed again on site, and you approve the final price before installation starts.
- A technician [PROVIDER PACK: DBS-check evidence] fixes the safe in a way that suits the model, the maker's instructions and the structure that was assessed.
- You can ask anything about using the safe and caring for the area around it, and you receive an invoice recording the safe, the fixing method and the position. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: itemised invoicing.]
Keep that invoice and any other paperwork from the installation, because your insurer may ask for evidence of how the safe was fitted when reviewing a claim. Reach us any time through the contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a safe have to be bolted down?
For most rated safes, yes. Installation needs differ from safe to safe, depending on the model, weight, maker's instructions, the structure and any insurer conditions, but a safe built for fixed installation should be fixed in a way that suits it and the location. Check the instructions and your insurance requirements before work starts.
What cash rating do I need?
That depends on what you are storing. Your insurer may specify a cash rating, valuables rating, resistance grade or accepted certification, so ask them first. Valuables limits are often higher than the cash rating, but the calculation varies.
What is a Eurograde safe?
A safe independently tested and graded under EN 1143-1. Grades start at 0 and go up, each step meaning the safe resisted a longer, more determined attack in testing.
My safe says "security safe" on it. Is that certified?
Not necessarily. Many safes carry a maker's own description or star rating without independent EN 1143-1 or EN 14450 certification. Look for a plate naming the standard and the testing body.
Can you fit a safe I have already bought?
Yes, wherever you bought it. Send the product manual, the installation instructions and details of any fixings supplied, and we will check it against the spot you have chosen.
Where is the best place to put a safe?
Somewhere hidden, on a structure that will hold it, and not the first place anyone looks. The best position depends on the safe's design, weight and use, access and the supporting structure; a solid concrete floor is usually ideal.
Can you fit a key safe for a carer?
Key safes are commonly fitted so carers or family can get in. It should be out of sight of the street and fixed into solid masonry. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: key safe fitting offered.]
How much does safe installation cost in Woking?
It depends on the safe's size and weight, the fixing method, what the floor or wall is made of, access and whether it is a bolt-down or an underfloor job. Send a photo and you will get a price on the call.
