When a Business Cannot Open, Every Hour Counts

Staff are waiting on the pavement, a delivery cannot be taken in and customers are finding the door shut. Woking Locksmith works on business premises across Woking around the clock, from a shop that will not open at eight in the morning to a lock change booked after closing, with no call-out charge at any hour.

At home, a lock fault is an inconvenience; on a shop, office or unit it stops trade. The work is often the same as on a house, but the cost of waiting is not, so business jobs are handled around trading rather than through it. For urgent help, see emergency locksmith.

What Businesses Call Us About

Nearly every commercial call fits one of five situations. Before calling, follow the link for your situation to read a full explanation of the work involved.

01

Locked out of the premises

Nobody can open up, the only keyholder cannot be reached, or a key has snapped in the lock first thing. Most doors are opened without damage, so the existing lock keeps working, and an early-morning lockout is treated as urgent. See locked out and.

02

A member of staff has left with keys

A household rarely faces this one. When keys are missing after someone leaves, changing the cylinders on every door they could open is the only way to be sure, since old keys go on working whoever holds them. It can usually be booked outside trading hours: see Key Control When Staff Change.

03

The entrance door has failed

The front entrance will not lock, a handle has worked loose or a mechanism has worn out after years of heavy use. Often the door is aluminium or commercial-grade uPVC, and often only one part has failed while the door itself is fine. See lock repair or.

The premises have been broken into

Shutters forced, an entrance door damaged, or a unit that cannot be locked until the police are done. Report it to Surrey Police on 101 or online at surrey.police.uk and keep the crime reference for your insurer. We secure the premises, repair what can be repaired and board what has to wait: see burglary repairs and.

Insurance or a lease requires a lock upgrade

Your commercial policy or your lease names a lock standard for the entrance. Once you know exactly what the document asks for, it is usually simple to meet, so read the wording before buying anything. See lock installation or.

Why a Commercial Lock Is Not a Domestic Lock

The real difference is how hard the lock works. Over a day, a house front door might open a dozen times; an entrance serving a shop or office can open several hundred times. Commercial doors need heavier-duty cylinders, handles and closers because frequent use at a business entrance quickly wears down hardware suited to a home. The expensive part is rarely the part itself; it is the repeat visit and the disruption every time it fails.

Business entrances also come in forms a house seldom has, so the specification changes with them:

  • aluminium shopfront doors, which take different lock cases and cylinders from uPVC or timber
  • roller shutters and shutter locks, guarding the frontage when you are closed
  • cylinders with a longer working life, and heavier mechanisms built for the traffic
  • lock types chosen for how the door is used, not for the lowest price

Get the specification wrong and you pay for it again and again; get it right and the door simply works. When calling, describe the door material and the hardware already fitted. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM item 17: whether commercial-grade hardware is stocked or sourced.]

Key Control When Staff Change

A business with a dozen staff and several keyholders loses track of its keys far more easily than a family does. Keys get lent, copied and not always returned, and every departure, every contractor and every lost key adds to the doubt. When someone leaves on poor terms, or just never hands their key back, the truthful answer is that you no longer know who can open your door.

Replacing the cylinders on all affected doors makes every existing key for those doors unusable. The lock cases and handles usually remain in place, so businesses often find the cylinder change takes less time and costs less than they anticipated. Where several doors need to work together, the new cylinders can be keyed alike so one key opens the set. And a simple record of who holds which key costs nothing and stops the question coming up again. Book it through lock replacement.

Premises We Work On

This is the range of business property we cover. The same technicians handle domestic and commercial work, so a shop with a flat above is one call, not two. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: premises types covered.]

  • shops and retail units, including shopfronts and shutters
  • offices and professional premises
  • pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants
  • industrial units, workshops and storage
  • schools, surgeries, salons and community buildings
  • landlords and managing agents with commercial units to let, and managed buildings with communal entrances

For homes, see residential locksmith; for rented housing, see landlord and HMO services.

Work Scheduled Around Your Trading Hours

Most businesses would far rather have locks changed at six in the evening than at eleven in the morning with customers on the shop floor. Planned visits can take place outside your opening hours, with emergency cover already available 24 hours a day, every day. A cylinder change, a new lock on the stockroom door or a replacement shutter lock can be booked before you open or after you close, so the disruption lands where it costs least and nobody sees a locksmith at the door. Mention your trading pattern when you call. Out-of-hours slots are charged at the higher labour rate, so we will tell you the price for the time you choose before you book.

Fire Doors and Escape Routes

Business premises carry duties around escape routes that a home does not. A door on an escape route must let people out without a key, which is usually done with keyless exit hardware on the inside, such as a thumbturn, push pad or panic bar, while the outside stays locked. BS 8621 is the British Standard for lock assemblies with keyless egress, and panic hardware has its own standards. What a particular building needs depends on its use and its fire risk assessment, so check that before changing anything on an escape route; the assessment itself is a job for a fire safety professional, not a locksmith. For fitting, see lock installation, and for how lock standards work, BS 3621 and insurance-approved locks explained. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether panic hardware is supplied or fitted.]

Invoicing and Paperwork

Every business job comes with an itemised VAT invoice setting out the work, the premises and any hardware fitted, ready for your accounts team and for an insurance claim where one applies. Where you have more than one property, work can be invoiced per job or per site. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: VAT registration status, itemised invoicing, and multi-site invoicing on one account.] Ask when you call how you would like it set out.

Locksmith pricing

What Does a Commercial Locksmith Cost?

Commercial work is priced on the job, and these are the things that move the figure:

  • the door type, and whether it is aluminium or commercial-grade
  • the hardware specification the traffic calls for
  • how many doors and entrances are involved
  • whether the work is planned or urgent, and the time of day

[CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether commercial rates differ from domestic, and whether a commercial starting price can be published.] For an emergency, call with your business postcode and a short description of the problem; for planned work, tell us the door and your opening hours. Either way there is no call-out charge, the price is given on the call, and if something on site changes it, you are told before work starts.

You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged.

For other jobs, see the full guide to locksmith prices in Woking. Call 01483 377197 for your price.

What affects the cost?

Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you come out before we open?

Yes, and it is often the better choice. With cover running 24 hours, planned work can be booked before opening or after closing so it never happens in front of customers. Lockouts and failed entrances are treated as urgent at any hour.

A member of staff has left and not returned their keys. What now?

Change the cylinders on every door they could open. Nothing else gives certainty, because a mechanical key keeps working whoever has it. Where several doors are involved, the new cylinders can be keyed alike.

Are commercial locks different from the ones on a house?

Mainly in how hard they are used. A shop entrance may open hundreds of times a day, so cylinders, handles and closers are specified for heavier wear, and shopfronts, shutters and escape doors need hardware a home never does.

Do you work on aluminium shopfront doors?

The lock cases and cylinders used on aluminium doors differ from those for uPVC or timber; aluminium is common at commercial entrances. Tell us the door type when you call, because it changes the parts and the time needed. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: aluminium shopfront work offered.]

Our insurance says we need a particular lock standard. Can you help?

Start by checking the exact wording of your commercial policy or lease: these documents often specify an entrance-door lock standard, and compliance is usually straightforward once the requirement is clear. Send us the wording if you have it.

Our fire exit door needs a new lock. What do we need?

Getting out through a door on an escape route must not require a key. The standard for keyless egress is BS 8621, which uses a thumbturn on the inside, and panic bars or push pads have their own standards. What your building needs depends on its fire risk assessment.

Can you do work across more than one of our sites?

Businesses with several premises can have work planned across sites. Tell us how many properties are involved when you call. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: multi-site work and invoicing.]

Will we get a proper invoice for our accounts?

For your accounts and any insurance claim, we provide an itemised invoice recording the premises, the work carried out and any hardware fitted. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: VAT status and invoicing.]
