Locked Out? Here Is What to Do Right Now

The decision that matters first is whether you need a locksmith tonight or can get in another way. If you are locked out of your house in Woking, try every other door you can reach safely and ring anyone who holds a spare key; if neither gets you in, call a locksmith instead of forcing the door.

  1. Pause, and make sure you really are locked out: check pockets, bags and the car.
  2. Walk round the whole property, not only the door in front of you.
  3. Phone anyone with a spare key.
  4. If you rent, phone your landlord or letting agent.
  5. If none of that works, call a locksmith.

Before You Call: Three Things Worth Checking

These three checks are safe, they cost nothing, and they may save you a locksmith visit altogether. If getting in would mean climbing, forcing an entrance or risking damage to the house, do not attempt it.

Check every door, not just this one. A lot of lockouts turn out to be one locked front door while a back door, patio door or side gate is still open. Try the entrances you normally use and can reach on foot, stay at ground level, and never go in through a window or any other unsafe opening.

Call every spare-key holder first. A partner, a housemate, a parent or a trusted neighbour may have a set. If they are close by, that is probably the fastest and cheapest way in. A two-minute phone call is free.

If you rent, ring the landlord or letting agent. Look in your tenancy paperwork for their number or the emergency contact. They often keep a spare set, or have a set process for tenant lockouts.

Why Forcing the Door Is the Expensive Option

Pushing hard on the door or levering something round the lock can damage the cylinder, the handle, the locking mechanism, the seals or the frame, and turn a simple lockout into a much bigger repair. On a uPVC door this gets costly quickly, because several linked locking parts can be strained at once and the door panel itself can crack. Smashing a window adds a risk of injury, leaves the house insecure, and may add glazing or boarding on top of the original bill.

You will see tricks online, such as sliding a card into the gap. They only ever work on a latch that was never locked, and rarely on a modern UK door. We do not publish how-to methods for getting past locks, and we would ask you not to try them. There is also a security point: if a door gave way that easily for you, it would for a burglar too, and you would need a lock replacement anyway.

The cheaper route is to let a locksmith look at the door and pick a suitable entry method; non-destructive entry comes first wherever the lock type and its condition allow. See how to choose a trustworthy locksmith.

Should You Call the Police or Fire Brigade?

Usually not. Police and fire services do not, as a rule, attend ordinary household lockouts, and when nobody is in danger a locksmith is the right person to ring. The exception is real danger: dial 999 first if there is a fire, a medical emergency, or a child, an older person or anyone vulnerable shut inside and at risk. For everything else, call 01483 377197.

How We Get You Back In Without Damaging the Lock

The first aim is getting you inside without doing damage you will have to pay for later. The locksmith looks at the door, the lock type and its condition, then picks the method. Where the lock allows, professional picking or bypass techniques can open the door without drilling, and if the lock is still safe and in good order you carry on using it with the keys you already have. That is often possible on the euro cylinders, mortice locks and night latches found on homes.

The limits are real. Some anti-snap cylinders and other high-security locks resist non-destructive methods, and a lock that is broken or seized may leave no option but drilling and replacement. Drilling is the last resort. If it is needed, you are told why and what the replacement will cost before any work begins. See lock replacement and broken key removal.

Common Lockout Situations We Attend

A lockout is not always about a missing key. Where the key has ended up, whether the lock still works and any existing damage all affect how entry or repairs can be carried out. In Woking, flats make up 29.4% of the 30,440 households, alongside detached 27.3%, semi-detached 24.2% and terraced 19.0% (Census 2021 TS044), so some lockouts involve a communal entrance as well as a front door; mention it when you call.

01

Keys locked inside the house

The commonest lockout of all: the door swung shut with the keys on the side, in another room or still in the lock. The lock itself is usually undamaged, so a non-destructive method can normally get you in with no replacement needed.

02

Lost or stolen keys

This is different, because the keys are now out there somewhere. Getting back in only fixes tonight's problem. If they went missing away from home or were stolen, changing the lock is worth thinking about so nobody can use them later.

03

Key snapped in the lock

When part of the key stays in the cylinder, the door may not open at all. Leave the broken piece where it is and do not poke tools into the lock; pulling at it usually turns a simple extraction into a whole new lock.

View Broken Key Removal
04

Key left in the other side of the door

On some night latches and euro cylinders, a key left in the inside stops the outside key from working. It is a routine job with its own technique, and no reason to force the door or keep turning your key.

05

The lock has failed and will not turn

Here the keys are fine; the mechanism is not. A worn cylinder, a failed multipoint gearbox or a door that has dropped out of alignment can all stop a lock working, and once you are in it may need repair or replacement. See lock repair or.

Locksmith pricing

What Does It Cost to Get Back Into Your House?

A standard weekday lockout, Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm, starts from £70.80 including VAT (£59 plus VAT). That is the starting price for a straightforward lockout in working hours, not a quote for every job. Non-destructive entry is tried first wherever the lock allows, which keeps the cost down. There is no call-out charge, and you get a price on the call from what you describe; if something on site changes it, you are told before any work starts.

What moves the final figure:

  • the type and condition of the lock;
  • the entry method it needs;
  • whether the lock is already damaged or seized;
  • any new parts or repair work, such as a lock that needs replacing afterwards;
  • the time of the call: evenings after 6pm, nights, weekends and bank holidays are charged at a higher labour rate. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: publish an out-of-hours from-price including VAT, or keep this qualitative.]

You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged.

What affects the cost?

Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.

How Quickly Can We Reach You?

[PROVIDER PACK: arrival range when a technician is already nearby; typical arrival range.] [CLIENT SIGN-OFF REQUIRED: if no figures are approved, use: "We give you an honest arrival estimate when you call, based on where you are and where our nearest technician is."] The real time depends on where in Woking you are, the traffic, the hour and which technician is free. You get an honest estimate on the call, and if it changes you are told. For the detail, see our emergency locksmith page.

Locked Out of a Rented Property in Woking?

Renting is common here: 23.4% of Woking households rent privately and 12.3% from a social landlord, with 63.2% owning (Census 2021 TS054). If you rent, make the first call to your landlord, letting agent or the emergency number in your tenancy paperwork. They may hold a spare key or have a set way of handling tenant lockouts, and check your tenancy agreement before any lock is changed. If they cannot come out, we can open the door, and we will normally ask you to confirm that you live there.

Landlords and letting agents looking after several Woking properties can treat a tenant lockout as a routine call-out. See landlord and letting agent services, or commercial premises lockouts for business properties.

Lockout Coverage Across Woking

Homeowners, tenants, landlords and businesses all call us out to lockouts across Woking. The Woking built-up area had around 75,700 usual residents at the 2021 Census (ONS), across the GU21 and GU22 postcode districts (ONSPD Feb 2026, 1,835 live postcodes), and we work from Horsell and Knaphill to Mount Hermon. Mount Hermon has a high share of flats and much private renting (Census 2021, output areas around the area), so lockouts there are often a flat door behind a shared entrance.

We also serve three towns from Woking, each with its own page:

  • Locksmith West Byfleet
  • Locksmith New Haw
  • Locksmith Sheerwater

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a locksmith open my door without damaging it?

Opening the door without damage is often possible; the lock's type and condition determine whether it can be done. Picking and bypass methods can open many standard UK door locks without drilling and leave the lock working, so your keys still fit. If the lock is broken, seized or will not yield to a suitable non-destructive method, drilling or replacement may be needed, and the reason and likely cost are explained before that work begins.

How much does it cost to get back into my house?

A standard weekday lockout between 7am and 6pm starts from £70.80 including VAT (£59 plus VAT). That is a starting price, not a quote for every job; the lock type, the time of the call and any parts change the total, and you are told the price before work starts. There is no call-out charge.

Will the police or fire brigade let me back in?

Not for an ordinary lockout. The exception is a genuine emergency: dial 999 if a child, an older person or anyone vulnerable is shut inside and at risk, or if there is a fire or medical emergency.

Can I get in myself with a credit card?

Almost never on a modern UK door. It only works on a latch that was not actually locked, and doors with a euro cylinder or multipoint mechanism will not move that way. Trying to force a uPVC door can damage the mechanism and the door, so call instead.

Do I need to change my locks after being locked out?

Not usually. If you shut the door with the keys inside, the lock is fine. If your keys were lost away from home or stolen, a lock change is worth considering, because whoever has them could come back.

How quickly can you get to me?

[PROVIDER PACK: arrival range when nearby; typical arrival range across Woking.] It depends on where you are, the time of day, traffic, and whether a technician is already on a job; you get an honest estimate on the call.

I rent my home. Who should I call first?

Your landlord or letting agent, or the emergency number in your tenancy paperwork. They often hold a spare set. If they cannot attend or you cannot reach them, we can open the door, and we will normally ask you to confirm that you live there.

My key is in the other side of the door. Can you still open it?

Often, yes, depending on the lock. A key left on the inside is a common call-out on older night latches and some euro cylinders, and there is a specific technique for it. Do not force the door or keep turning the outside key; tell us when you call.
