Lock Not Working Properly? We Repair It Rather Than Replace It
Key stiff or refusing to turn? Handle gone floppy or will not lift? Door dropped and catching on the frame, or a lock that spins without catching? Woking Locksmith repairs faulty door locks, handles and door alignment across Woking, and tells you straight when a repair will do the job instead of a whole new lock.
Difficulty locking a door can have causes other than a faulty lock. The hinges, the keeps or the way the door hangs can be to blame, so the cause is found before any part is changed. There is no call-out charge, and the price is explained before any agreed work. If you would rather see what a new lock involves, read about lock replacement.
Is It the Lock, or Is It the Door?
One simple test tells you whether you have a lock fault or a door fault, and the answer changes both the job and the cost. Open the door fully, then work the key and the handle carefully with the door standing open.
If the lock works fine with the door open
If the key turns and the handle moves more easily with the door open, the lock is probably fine and the locking points are no longer meeting their slots. The door may have dropped, a hinge may have moved, or a keep or strike plate may be out of place. That is an adjustment job, not a new lock, and usually the cheaper outcome of the two. See door, handle and alignment repairs below.
If the lock still fails with the door open
If the lock still sticks or will not engage with the door open, the fault is probably inside the lock: a worn cylinder, a tired latch spring, a broken gearbox or another internal part. That part needs repairing or replacing, and no hinge adjustment will cure it. See lock replacement or.
Common Lock and Door Faults We Repair
Most people describe a broken door lock by what it does, not by what has failed, so these are written that way. Find yours, see the likely cause, and ring if it matches.
The key is stiff or will not turn
Usual culprits: grit in the cylinder, a worn cylinder or key, pressure on the locking points, or a door out of line straining the mechanism. Do not force the key. A stiff lock rarely improves on its own and often fails outright soon after. A dry graphite lubricant suits a cylinder better than a spray cleaner. See key stuck in the lock.
The handle is floppy or will not lift
A loose handle can be a worn spindle or fixings that have worked loose. On uPVC and composite doors, a handle that lifts without throwing the bolts usually means the multipoint gearbox has failed or is going; forcing it is what turns a repair into a replacement.
The door has dropped, sticks or will not close
The door no longer sits square in its frame, so the latch or locking points miss their keeps. It is common on heavy composite doors and older uPVC as hinges wear or the building settles. This is an alignment repair, covered in full in the next section. Call 01483 377197 to book.
The lock turns freely without locking
The cam on the cylinder, or the link between the cylinder and the mechanism, has failed, so the key turns and nothing happens. The door can look locked when it is not. That is a security problem, not an inconvenience, and should not be left. See lock replacement if the part cannot be saved.
The lock is broken or has been forced
After an attempted break-in, or when a part fails outright, the lock may be damaged beyond simple adjustment. A forced lock usually means the door and frame need checking too, because the strain spreads. See burglary repairs and.
Door, Handle and Alignment Repairs
How a lock behaves often depends on the door around it. A door that has shifted in its frame, worn fittings or a keep in the wrong place all put pressure on the locking system. Typical signs:
- the key is hard to turn only when the door is shut;
- the handle gets harder to lift;
- the door has to be pushed or pulled before it will lock;
- the latch or locking points do not engage smoothly;
- the door catches on the frame or will not close fully.
The fixes are real, skilled work. Flag hinges on uPVC doors can be raised, lowered and moved sideways to bring the door back into line. Keep plates can be repositioned so the locking points meet them properly. Worn hinges can be replaced, handles and spindles refitted or renewed, and doors that have dropped or warped corrected. On glazed uPVC doors the trade calls part of this "toe and heeling": re-packing the glass unit inside the door so the door holds its shape instead of sagging. A door that closes but does not lock cleanly is a security risk, not just an annoyance. Call 01483 377197 to have it looked at.

Why Forcing a Sticking Lock Costs You More
When a key gets hard to turn or a handle feels stiff, the instinct is to push harder. Do not. Extra force strains the key, the cylinder, the handle and the mechanism inside the door, when the real cause may be minor, such as alignment or a loose fitting. Plenty of failed mechanisms follow weeks of the handle being lifted harder and harder until the gearbox finally gives, often leaving the door locked shut.
That changes the bill. An alignment adjustment is the cheapest outcome; a mechanism replacement costs a good deal more; and an out-of-hours emergency locksmith visit to a jammed door, possibly with you locked out, costs the most. Stop using the lock if the key starts to bend, the handle goes loose or the door will not secure, and book an inspection while the fault is still small.
What affects the cost?
Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.
Repair or Replace: Which Do You Actually Need?
Repair usually makes sense for alignment problems, worn latches, loose handles, stiff cylinders and a single failed part on an otherwise sound door. Replacement usually makes sense when the lock is obsolete and parts are no longer made, when the door has been forced, when keys are unaccounted for, or when an insurer has asked for a specific standard. A good locksmith does not replace a lock that only needs adjusting.
Timing matters as much as the fix. Many repairs can be booked for a convenient time, but some cannot wait: a door that will not lock or secure, a lock damaged in an attempted break-in, a broken key stopping you getting in or locking up, or a door stuck open. Those are urgent. More in lock replacement in Woking and lock repair or replacement, which do you need.

Lock and Door Repairs Across Woking
We repair locks, handles and doors for homeowners, landlords and businesses across Woking, booked at a time that suits you, or the same day where a door will not secure. The Woking built-up area had around 75,700 usual residents at the 2021 Census (ONS), across the GU21 and GU22 postcode districts (ONSPD Feb 2026, 1,835 live postcodes), and we work from Horsell to Knaphill and Mount Hermon.
The doors vary. Households split into flats 29.4%, detached 27.3%, semi-detached 24.2% and terraced 19.0% of 30,440 (Census 2021 TS044), and homes date from before 1900 (6.2%), 1900 to 1939 (16.1%), 1945 to 1982 (42.7%), 1983 to 2008 (22.4%) and 2009 on (11.8%) (VOA CTSOP 4.1, 31 Mar 2026), so older timber doors and newer uPVC or composite doors both come up. Mount Hermon has a high share of flats and much private renting (Census 2021, output areas around the area), which means more communal doors and landlord-arranged repairs. Woking has 14 conservation areas (planning.data.gov.uk, Oct 2026), Old Woking and Mount Hermon among them, with no Article 4 direction on doors or windows found, which means unknown rather than none; repairing a lock does not change the door's appearance either way.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if it is the lock or the door?
Open the door fully and work the key and handle carefully with it standing open. If they move more easily, the problem is probably alignment, the hinges or the keeps. The cylinder, latch or internal mechanism is probably responsible when opening the door makes no difference to the lock fault.
Can a door lock be repaired, or does it always need replacing?
Many faults can be repaired. It depends on the fault, the condition of the parts and whether suitable parts are available. Often the door needs only an alignment adjustment, or one part repaired or replaced. A full replacement may be needed if the lock is badly damaged or no longer suitable.
My key is stiff. Should I use WD40?
Not as a lubricant. It is a cleaner and water displacer rather than a lasting lubricant, and can draw dirt into the cylinder over time. A dry graphite lubricant is the better choice. If the key is still stiff afterwards, have the lock checked rather than forcing it.
My uPVC door handle is getting harder to lift. Is that urgent?
Act on it soon. A handle getting stiffer usually means the multipoint mechanism is being forced against keeps that no longer line up, and each forced lift strains the gearbox further. Sorting the alignment now is far cheaper than a failed mechanism later.
Do you repair doors as well as locks?
Yes. Many lock problems are really door problems. Hinges can be adjusted, including uPVC flag hinges that move up, down and sideways; keep plates repositioned; worn hinges replaced; and handles and spindles refitted.
How much does a lock repair cost in Woking?
It depends on whether it is an adjustment or a part replacement, which component has failed, the door type and the time of day. An adjustment is normally the least expensive outcome. There is no call-out charge, and you get a price before work starts.
Should I call a locksmith, a carpenter or a handyman?
A locksmith for anything involving the lock, the mechanism or how the door engages with the frame. A carpenter or handyman can rehang a door, but is not usually set up to diagnose a multipoint mechanism or source the right replacement part.
Can you repair a lock that has been forced or damaged in a break-in?
Often, depending on the damage. After an attempted break-in the lock, the door and the frame all need checking, because the strain spreads. Where the lock cannot be saved, it can be replaced.
